Do I Need a Referral?
A medical referral is not necessary to receive treatment from a podiatrist. Only patients entitled to services paid by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs or those eligible for Medicare’s Enhanced Primary Care Program require a medical referral prior to treatment. Veterans must see their GP and ask for a D904 referral prior to seeing the podiatrist, unless they are receiving treatment in an aged care facility.
Is Podiatry Covered by Private Health Insurance?
Podiatry is covered in part by many health funds under “Extras” cover. Individual health fund rebates vary depending on the level of cover for which you are insured. We recommend you consult your Private Health Insurer for the details of your policy.
What Should I Expect at my Initial Consultation?
During your first consultation we will review your medical history and assess your condition. It may be helpful to bring a detailed list of your current medications to your appointment. We will discuss your symptoms, other contributing factors and any questions you may have. You will be provided with an accurate assessment of your foot health status and diagnosis of existing conditions, prior to your treatment. During your consultation education will be provided, to increase your understanding of your condition. Recommendations of methods to prevent or reduce complications and improve your foot health status will be made. You initial consultation is likely to be longer than those following, we recommend you set aside at least 45 minutes for this appointment.
Is Podiatry Covered by Medicare?
Medicare has introduced an Enhanced Primary Care Program which enables GP’s to refer patients with chronic illness or disabilities (such as Diabetes) to Allied Health Service Providers, including Podiatrists, for a certain number of visits per year. See your GP to discuss your eligibility. A Medicare-EPC referral and Care Plan is required from your GP prior to Podiatry treatment.
What are the Terms for Payment and Cancellation?
Payment is due and payable in the form of cash or cheque at the time of consultation. If you need to cancel your appointment, adequate notice is requested (at least 48hrs would be appreciated, if possible).
How Much can I Expect to Pay?
Initial consultation fees may vary from $45 to $70 depending on the treatment required. Most initial consultations will receive a fee of $55. There is a discount for individuals receiving the aged pension who may expect to pay $45 for their initial consultation. Additional charges can be expected for those eligible for home visits.
